Top Health Tips to Beat the Summer Heat

Although summer is the time for outdoor activities, fun, and vacations, we all need to be aware how your health conditions can be affected by the summer heat. The young ones and older ones need to consider the health hazards of the summer heat such as heat stroke, which can be lethal, and other heat-related injuries like cramps caused by lack of water intake, nausea and weakness as well as headaches caused by heat exhaustion.

Seniors are also more prone to these heat-related issues because they are less sensitive to feeling the heat. They are therefore more likely not noticing the warning signs of these heat-related dangers. This is due to the fact that as a person becomes older, the response of the body to higher temperatures also changes.

Here are some-some-summertime tips for seniors to beat the heat.

Reduce those strenuous activities. When the thermometer cranks up to high temperatures, seniors should stay in cool, air-conditioned rooms. If their homes are not air conditioned, a nice trip to the theatre or other cool venue can help. They should also be advised to lessen their strenuous, physical activities because the more rigorous the movements, the higher the body temperature will rise.

Three words: Hydrate. Hydrate. Hydrate. Seniors should have ample water intake, at least 4-8 glasses a day, even if they do not feel thirsty. Intake of alcohol and caffeinated drinks should be minimized as well. Also, eating fresh fruits and vegetables can help hydrate the body as well as keeping the body healthy. As an indicator of proper hydration, urine must already be clear in color.

Avoid too much of sun. Use sunblock with at least SPF 30 or higher when going outdoors, especially for prolonged periods of time, even for cloudy or hazy days.

Wear cool clothes. Cool clothing, especially light colored ones and loose lightweight dresses can help maintain a normal body temperature. When heading outdoors, put on several layers of clothes. When going back inside, turn on the air conditioning and or use open windows and fans to prevent the body from experiencing drastic temperature changes.

Scream for Ice Cream. Everyone, especially seniors, should be treated to ice cream, popsicles, and any other frozen treats to keep everyone cool during the hot season.

Beware of medications. Many medications or senior diets may increase risk of heat-related issues. Hot weather can accelerate dehydration, especially in people who are taking medications that have the side effects of fluid and electrolyte loss. Some medications, especially antibiotics and diuretics can hinder the body's natural ability to deal with the heat. Be sure to check with a pharmacist or doctor to be certain that medications will not cause you or your loved ones to be more susceptible to heat-related problems. Additionally, if seniors are on a low-carbohydrate diet; be sure they drink plenty of fluids, as the additional proteins in this kind of diet may cause the body to heat up more quickly.

Check in. Be sure that someone looks out for the senior's safety. Perhaps have a neighbor check on them daily while you are away and also provide your seniors with relevant contact numbers in times of emergency.

If ever you observe signs of heat exhaustion or dehydration such as weakness, nausea, heavy or no sweating, rapid pulse, and/or fainting, move the affected senior immediately to the nearest cool shade and provide with ventilation and liquids like cool juice or water. Also, you can help increase the cool by applying cold compress and calling for medical assistance as soon as it is necessary.
